Grading information

In order to progress to the next belt, students are expected to learn the relevant syllabus work, which they will then be tested on in a formal exam, or grading to ensure they have reached the required standard.

Gradings take place around every six weeks. Before a grading, Sensi Iain will look at students' work and begin the process of seelcting those ready for grading. These students will receive a letter which must be returned signed, along with the licence and grading fee.

• If there is something you are not sure about - ASK. I will always make time to show you a technique or explain something you’re not sure about.

• Pay particular attention to the corrections that have been made to your recent practise….. these errors have been pointed out to you for a reason. Do not ignore them. Success is in the detail!

• Practise, practise, practise... there is no substitute. If you put the work in before the grading, you should have no problems on the day.

Frequently asked grading questions

We understand that gradings raise a lot of questions, and have tried to answer a lot of the more common one in our frequently asked questions section.

However, if you have a question which isn't covered in this section, or you would like to discuss further with Sensei Iain, you can contact him using the contact form on the site, or ask him at your next training session.
