Tsuki-waza - Punching

Punching techniques in karate are called tsuki or zuki. The fist should be tight, and contact made with the first two knuckles. Punches vary in technique, speed, range, and momentum.

Uchi-waza - Striking

For a technique to be classified as a punch, contact must be made with the first two knuckles. If any other part of the hand is used to make contact, such as the back of the fist (uraken) or the bottom of the fist (tetsui), then the blow is classified as a strike.
