The martial art of karate is primarily a striking art which uses punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes, in addition to open-handed techniques such as knife-hands and ridge-hands.

Karate was developed in the Japanese Ryukyu Islands from indigenous fighting methods and Chinese kenpõ (a variety of Chinese martial arts). As a result of this, instruction is given in Japanese, and after 7th kyu, there is no instruction in gradings given in English at all. This section of the site has been complied to help with the learning and understanding of the Japanese words encountered on the route to black belt.
