The martial art of karate is primarily a striking art which uses punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes, in addition to open-handed techniques such as knife-hands and ridge-hands.
Karate was developed in the Japanese Ryukyu Islands from indigenous fighting methods and Chinese kenpõ (a variety of Chinese martial arts). As a result of this, instruction is given in Japanese, and after 7th kyu, there is no instruction in gradings given in English at all.
